Successful launch of LiDA

The OERu was excited to complete the inaugural offering of Learning in a Digital Age earlier this year.  This offering coincided with the "soft launch of the OERu 1st year of study"

While we didn't market the course widely so we could test the technologies, we were very pleased to have 703 registered (and 659 unregistered) participants from 60 different countries. I will be reporting back at the OERu consultation meeting on 16 October 2018 (NZDT) on these results.

OERu develops support resource on blogging

Blogs provide learners the freedom to construct their own personal learning environments.

To support learners who may want to create a blog for the first time, the OERu is developing a support tutorial on blogging. True to our open philosophy, feedback on these learning resources is always welcome.  This post has been created to generate a screenshot showing the anatomy of a blog for the tutorial under development.

WikiEducator saves you time and money -- Thanks Jim!

WikiEducator has been experimenting with remix options for reusable and portable content.  All you need to do is click, copy and paste!

This means that it is now easier for schools and tertiary education institutions to share learning materials for delivery in their own learning management systems, blogs and websites.

The OER Foundation has now implemented a cut-and-paste feature so you don't need to worry about remembering the HTML syntax.

Instructions

In WikiEducator, under the links option in the toolbox (on the left-hand side of your screen) you will find a few options relating to links including iFrame support which is used for embedding WikiEducator content in external sites.

Go to the WikiEducator page you want to embed, click on "links". Choose the iFrame option you would like to embed by clicking on the text. This will automatically highlight the html text you should copy for pasting into your target website. You have the option of embedding the exact revision or the most recent version which will keep up to date with community edits in the wiki.

Couldn't be easier! Thanks Jim for saving WikiEducators time and money. You will find more instructions from WikiEducator below demonstrating how the feature can be used in your blogs and websites which supporting the <iframe> tag.

Remixing "Open Content Licensing 4 Educators"

This is a very early beta example of what one of the Open Content Licensing 4 Educators project being developed on WikiEducator might look like in a blog post.

The OER Foundation, OpenCourseware Consortium, UNESCO and Creative Commoners are collaborating on the development of guidelines and ultimately a free online course to help educators take informed decisions about open content licensing.

Here is an early preview of the Creative Commons unplugged tutorial:

Still lots of work to do and very much "work in progress".

WikiEducator remix

The untapped potential of OER lies in the remix. Here we demonstrate how to embed a WikiEducator online tutorial for educators who use blogging technologies to support their online teaching. Educators can collaborate on developing OERs on WikiEducator then reuse this content in a variety of delivery technologies including learning management systems, blogs, and websites.

Of course it is possible to use the same approach for embedding OERs from WikiEducator in your favourite learning management system. Here we have posted a few examples using Moodle (login as a guest to view these pages.)

The remix is based on using the HTML <iframe> tag with a proof of concept demonstration on the WikiEducator server which instructs the target website to remove the redundant Mediawiki specific navigation elements.  Our next step is to think about reuse scenarios for developing a user friendly interface for generating the HTML to paste over to the target site under alternative use cases.
